Ducks
All of our ducks are penned at night for their protection. We have several predators that think duck is a delicacy. During the day they are free to play on our 2 1/2 acre pond. We feel this is the most fun way to enjoy them. We get to see antics and behaviors that you wouldn't see when they are kept in a pen.
British Trout Runner
This is a lightweight breed averaging 4-6 lbs. These are by far our most popular breed. There are good for eggs, meat, show, pets, decoration and amusement. Females lay about 150-300 eggs a year. A little flock of Trouties is like having your own band of Keystone Cops. They are hilarious to watch and by far the most friendly breed we have raised yet. They feather out to look similar to mallards except Trout females are spotted like trout instead of being penciled. British Trout Runners have only been available in the US for a few years and are listed as an endangered breed. They are not yet found in the Standard of Perfection.
Mallard
This is a bantam breed averaging 4-5 lbs. They are really just for decoration and amusement. Females only lay 25 eggs a year. We use our mallard ducks to hatch out the eggs of the breeds who are lousy mothers. Currently, our mallard duck Banana is head over heels for a Swedish/Mallard cross drake named Blue Boy. We expect to see some really beautiful ducklings from them this year. Mallards are listed as abundant and are in the Standard of Perfection.
Indian Runner
Indian Runner ducks come in 17 different varieties, British Trout is one. A variety is a color pattern. They are a light weight breed of duck averaging 4-6 lbs. Females lay 150-300 eggs a year. We are told their meat is considered a delicacy. We don't have the heart to eat any of them. Runners are extremely friendly. We can call them in off of our 2 1/2 acre pond (only if you're holding a white feed bucket, just kidding). The abundance or rarenesss of a runner depends on the variety chosen. Some color patterns are easy to find, others are endangered. There are only 6 varieties of runner found in The Standard Of Perfection; Chocolate, Cumberland Blue, Fawn & White, Gray, White and Pencilled. 11 more to go.
Swedish
This is a medium weight breed averaging 6-8 lbs. They can be used for meat, eggs, show, decoration, snail/slug control, or pets. Females lay about 100-150 eggs per year. The breed standard for showing this duck is the hardest to achieve as their markings have to be very precise; blue body with a white bib and first 2 flight feathers on both wings white. It took us three years to produce this pattern and we only have on breeding pair that gives show quality babies every time. You'll notice in the photo neither of our breeders are blue. That is because blue is a dilute of the black gene and silver is a dilute of the blue gene. Therefore, breeding a black with a silver produces only blue. Breeding blue to blue produces blues, blacks, and rarely silver. Swedish are listed as a fairly common breed and are in The Standard Of Perfection.
Rouen Edit Text
This is a heavy weight breed averaging 8-12 lbs. They are a dual purpose duck good for meat, decoration, pest control, and eggs. Females lay about 35-150 eggs a year. They are just incredible to look at. We call them our mallards on steriods. Rouens are listed as common and found in The Standard Of Perfection.
